Mandatory CCTV in all Welsh Slaughterhouses

The Issue

As CCTV is mandatory in slaughterhouses in England, why is it not yet mandatory in Wales?

Understand this - I am not opposed to eating meat as it is a natural part of our food chain but ONLY ethically killed animals should be what we eat. In Wales, we are a proud farming country and we respect our animals so sign this petition to protect them from cruelty behind closed doors.

There are currently 26 abattoirs in Wales. In 2015, 3,000,000+ animals were killed in our abattoirs. How many can we say were killed ethically to put food on our plates? We don't know the answer, which is wrong.

Sign this petition today to demand mandatory surveillance in ALL abattoirs in Wales. We would be nothing without our farms, so let's show we respect our animals and are humane about how we feed our country.

After all, why would we NOT want CCTV unless we have something to hide?

Keep in mind, CCTV will not abolish cruelty to animals but it will certainly decrease the amount of cruelty happening which is one step closer to our goal.

Sign and share this petition to show you care about our Welsh animals.

Responded
Animal welfare is a priority for the Welsh Government. We take animal welfare seriously and expect others to do so too. Our larger slaughterhouses, which process the vast majority of animals, do have CCTV and adhere to a protocol jointly developed and agreed by the Food Standards Agency and industry bodies to enable Official Veterinarians access to CCTV footage. We are committed to working with slaughterhouse operators in a supportive relationship. Via our Food Business Investment Scheme we are supporting small and medium sized slaughterhouses to, amongst other things, install and upgrade CCTV systems. Whilst CCTV cannot replace direct oversight by slaughterhouse management or Official Veterinarians, particularly in very small premises, it can provide objective supporting evidence of good practice. This is why we have made a commitment to require CCTV in all slaughterhouses during this Government’s term. Lesley Griffiths Welsh Government Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd
