The jail term for Alexey Navalny, announced on July 18, is the first such sentencing of an opposition leader in post-communist Russia on trumped-up criminal charges.  It will serve to intimidate anyone who participates or even only thinks of participating in Russian politics on the side of the opposition.  This sentencing is cause for grave concern for many people, both inside and outside of Russia, who care about its democratic development, regardless of their opinions of Mr.Navalny’s political views. In light of the above, we now ask Commissioner Pillay to provide her assessment of this trial and of the sentence, as well as its implications for Russia’s democratic development.
