TeAnn is a chef and CEO at R.E.A.L., a private chef service which stands for Relationship. Eating. Authentic. Love. She is also an activist with Social Justice Bermuda, an organisation that campaigns to address racism, reform the criminal justice system, improve access to healthcare and food, achieve economic equity, and strengthen public education.

Here are the top 3 things I learned from TeAnn Hassell during our discussion on food justice, health, and protest:

1. Good food is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle, which enables activists to campaign better. If you take care of yourself, you are better placed to take care of others.

2. Grassroots campaigning is an essential part of social change. By working with people and communities on the ground, you can make a direct difference to people’s lives.

3. Successful advocacy efforts demand organised actions and teamwork: Members of a group should know each other’s skills, and work together cohesively and strategically for effective change. If you’re a great public speaker, article the demands of your cause. If you’re great with finances, help fundraise and balance the books. If you’re great with legal methods, help review draft legislation, identify gaps, and draft amendments. No one person can do it all - but a team can do more, especially with a clear mission, goal, and vision in mind.
