Dear Ryan Gosling: Refuse You Oscar Nomination for Barbie

The issue

On the 24th of January, Oscar nominated actor Ryan Gosling released a statement to CNN in which he expressed his displeasure regarding the omission of Barbie co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig from the 2024 Academy Award nominations.

Part of Gosling's statement read:

"There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.

No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.

To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."

Considering Gosling's disappointment towards the Academy, it is only fair that in act of solidarity and allyship, he refuse his Best Supporting Actor nomination. Or, in a lesser degree of protest, not attend the Oscar ceremony held on the 11th of March.

Afterall, if the message of the Barbie movie is to fight the "patriarchy" no matter the cost, then what is an Oscar nomination when compared to the slight directed to Gosling's friends and allies Robbie and Gerwig?
