PUTRAJAYA: The Government has set up a trust fund known as Tabung Harapan Malaysia (THM) for Malaysians to contribute towards alleviating the country's debt, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Prime Minister said that the fund was set up to accept contributions from the public who want to help ease the Government's financial situation.

“When people realised how bad the Government's finances are, many came forward, expressing their willingness to contribute.

“We welcome their act of patriotism and would like to thank them for their generosity,” he said on Wednesday after chairing the Cabinet meeting.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that Malaysians can make donations to THM, which will be managed “systematically and transparently” by the Finance Ministry.

“Due to the recent economic development and the growing concern among the rakyat on the country's current debt position, there are signs of awareness from the rakyat to lend their support to the Government,” said Lim in a statement on Wednesday.

“The rakyat voluntarily want to share their earnings with the Government to help ease the burden,” he said.

Only donations in ringgit will be accepted.

THM contributions can be deposited into Maybank account number 566010626452.

“On behalf of the Government, I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all Malaysians for your support, concerns and willingness to help the Government in addressing the current economic situation,” said Lim.

Last week, Lim had said that the country's debt was now RM1 trillion, higher than the figure announced by the previous administration.

OUR LETTER TO OUR DEAREST PRIME MINISTER.

To Our Dearest and Beloved Tun Mahathir,

After seeing this viral post of how Sabahbathi Rajalingam try to contribute to the country with just a small gesture which touches many hearts.

We are a bunch of Malaysians who don't know each other but we have the same Mission and Vision. We would like to show our love to our country and show our support to our new Government. "KAMI SEDIA, KAMI SETIA, BERKORBAN UNTUK NEGARA..."

We believe we can drive a movement to LET'S SAVE OUR COUNTRY as an initiative help repaying the national debts. Although it may be a very small amount, "sikit sikit lama lama menjadi bukit"

However, we need a channel to do this. We believe that the PM office would not want to be flooded with letters with money inside. The most important thing is we want this official and legal channel from the government and NOT going through any crowdfunding site or even NGOs. We want to make sure every cent goes to the government and help settling our national debts.

Our Beloved Tun Mahathir and all our beloved MinistersWE ARE READY TO HELP Let us have a channel to do this and help repaying our national debts

We hope to hear from you soon.

With Love and Sincerely,

RAKYAT MALAYSIA

M’sian Writes Touching Letter With RM100 Donation To Help Repay National Debt

Malaysians, how do you express and show your love for your country?

For Sabahbahti Rajalingam, the Selangor-native took it upon himself to not only grace the Prime Minister’s department with a heart-warming letter, but donated RM100 to aid the new government in repaying the national debt.

“As a Malaysian, I’m very happy with the new federal government, which is why I wholeheartedly wish to contribute in repaying the national debt,” the letter read.

“Although the amount is too little, I believe my effort will help in some ways to reduce the burden of the new government.

Sabahbathi then conveyed that he had enclosed RM100 donation money along with the letter, whilst relaying his hopes for the new government to manage the country’s finances and economy well.

The picture, which was uploaded by Paramjeet Singh Sidhu, yesterday quickly went viral as it managed to garner over 7.6k shares within 24 hours.

“I think this is a good gesture and confidence in the new Government. If Bank Negara can setup an account for all citizen to donate what they can to help the country, i think we will be able to settle the Debt faster.

“Tun M and the new government representative have sacrificed so much, this is a little return the rakyat can give back.

Let’s start a drive for this movement,” he urged.

With over 2.7k comments garnered, many promptly followed suit as they stated their support and willingness to chip in in hopes of saving Malaysia.
