Introduce strict Bharat Stage V pollution norms for the auto industry IMMEDIATELY

The Issue

With the winters comes the smog. Indian cities have the most polluted air in the world. This is the single biggest health challenge for urban India today. The smog triggers cardiac and lung diseases, lowers the IQ of children, and increases cancer rates. The Bharat Stage V emission norms are similar to those already in force in the West for more than five years! BS-V diesel vehicles emit ONE-FIFTH the particulate matter of BS-IV vehicles. But the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers says the industry needs many years of "development time to make and test vehicles suited to Indian conditions". The likely hidden agenda of the industry is to sell cheap vehicles as long as possible even at the cost of our health, just like they delayed introducing seat belts and airbags. The GOI must stop negotiating with the auto manufacturers. It must order BS-V compliance by the end of 2016, at least in the metropolitan regions. We don't want to be gassed to death just so that the auto industry can make some more profit.
