Make classes that are forced to be online due to the coronavirus pass/fail at UW-Stout

The Issue

Due to the unfortunate events surrounding the coronavirus and the move to online classes for the next two weeks (possibly longer), the University of Wisconsin Stout should make all classes for this semester evaluated on a pass/fail or credit/no credit. The classes this semester should have no effect on any student's GPA. The reasons for this follow:

  1. Some students lack access to the required tools to conduct their learning.
  2. Some students may have difficulty learning online versus face-to-face, which may have been preferred when entering the University. Changing the learning environment and method with such short notice will lead to a decrease in GPA for most students.
  3. Given that UW-Stout is a polytechnic university it makes it very difficult for students to effectively learn. They will have no materials and lack instruction for any kind of workshop, lab, etc. These are vital to students who need to complete their degrees.

GPA is extremely important in employment, gaining internships, and applying for graduate school. Making classes pass/fail will allow students to finish the semester without affecting their GPA during this unfortunate time. This will greatly benefit students and lead to a less stressful semester and help them succeed in the future.

Please take this into consideration, we are looking for your guidance as we deal with an unfortunate turn in our learning.

Sincerely,

A concerned UW-Stout student
