Adebayo Komolafe started this petition to LAUTECH Students' Community and

The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, is known for two parallel things- Technology Innovation and Cybercrime. However, the latter is more popular than the former. This has created an unfortunate narrative for the university and the students are viewed as dubious people;I personally have a first-hand experience of this. I had introduced myself to a woman in an organization I worked with in my freshman year. The woman was impressed with me until I mentioned my school and her attitude towards me changed. It was as if all the impression had gone with the mention of the name.

On the flip side,  LAUTECH has seen her alumni flourish in the Nigerian tech space and especially in the midst of the Yaba, Lagos technology phenomena. Examples of these businesses built by LAUTECH product include Printivo.com, Pass.ng, Babymigo.com etc.

The harm this unfortunate narrative has caused for us is magnanimous and will continue to grow if nothing is done. However we can change it.

Sometimes in 2018, I was opportuned to lead a team from the company I now work for,  Ennovate Lab (ennovatelab.com) to organize the first LAUTECH Innovation Challenge. Apart from the contest, we created content to retell the LAUTECH story in our own way. One of the strategy was to produce a videodocumentary where we interviewed some of the impressive Alumni majorly in the technology space.

Since when this menace started, the management of the university has refused to speak about it but argue it out (I had pulled some efforts in the build up to the Challenge to try to convince one of the management team members that the university has a bad name outside but to no avail) and not provide any concrete action.

Awareness and enligtenment (in form of posters, handbills and talks, innovation contests) should be made to discourage students from plying this route. Things like this can be published as we did for the LIC in a leading national newspaper. LAUTECH must declare a state of emergency in this regard. We will be amazed at the impact this will make in the very long run. To deny it is to prolong it. Let's do this.
