America’s wild horses and burros are protected under federal law as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West” that “enrich the lives of the American people.”

Yet for years, the federal government has treated native wild horses like feral pests – hunting them down with helicopters, stampeding them into traps, warehousing them in feedlot pens, robbing them of the two things most important to a wild horse – freedom and family. 

At least most were protected from slaughter …. Until now.

This year -- in a stunning reversal – the President's 2017 Budget seeks appropriations language to amend the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act and open the door to mass slaughter of these national icons. 

The language would allow the feds to turn over captured wild horses to local and state governments -- many of whom seek the mass removal and slaughter of mustangs --  and would strip wild horses of the legal status that currently protects them from being sold for slaughter.

At the same time, the administration is pursuing dangerous surgical sterilization of wild horses on the range – by castrating stallions and removing the ovaries of female horses (mares) in a procedure veterinarians term “barbaric.”

It's time to take a stand against the sterilization and slaughter of America's iconic wild horses.  Help us make  the voice of “We the People” is heard.
