De-Fund Global Zoos

The Issue

Zoos should be defunded because they often prioritize entertainment and profit over the well-being of animals. Many animals in zoos are kept in enclosures that are too small or lack the complexity of their natural habitats, leading to physical and psychological distress. Captivity can result in abnormal behaviors, such as pacing or self-harm, which are signs of poor mental health. Furthermore, the conservation and educational claims made by zoos are often overstated, as only a small percentage of species in zoos are endangered or part of successful reintroduction programs. Public funds could be better spent on preserving natural habitats and supporting in-situ conservation efforts, which offer a more ethical and effective way to protect wildlife.
