In a hail Mary attempt to get the court thrown out, the Sun (et al) asked the court to throw out Johnny Depp’s libel suit by alleging that Depp failed to turn over texts about trying to obtain drugs. Justice Nichol has determined today that Johnny Depp did breached the order but did NOT dismiss the suit. Instead, the court has given Depp the opportunity to rescue the situation by applying for “relief against sanctions.” A hearing about the sanctions was set for later today.
I’ll post updates as fast as I get them.
Personally, I don’t see what those texts have to do with the Sun calling Johnny a wife beater, but the court says that the timing of those texts is significant because of the timing. They were said to occur during a 3 day period in Australia when Heard insists that she was abused. Which is rubbish, of course, but that’s what court is for. To sort out the mess.
The sun libel trial is set to commence on July 7th, if everything stays the course.
