DC Council: Fund Programs and Services for LGBT Older Adults

In 2013, many LGBT individuals and organizations donated their time and energy to participate in LGBT focus groups to help the DC Department of Aging develop their Age Friendly City Plan.  We were hopeful when our input was solicited.  We were even more hopeful when LGBT older adults were mentioned by name in this plan.  Unfortunately, despite being part of the plan, since the launch of the Age Friendly City plan, little has been done to meet the unique needs of older LGBT Adults in the District.

It is disappointing that no reliable city-wide data exists on the needs of older LGBT adults in the District of Columbia, but we know from our experience that these needs are very real.

LGBT older adults in this generation are less likely to have a spouse or partner to assist them in their older years.  They are also less likely to have children who can assist in their care.   Many experience isolation and loneliness, and of course many older gay and bisexual men and older transgender individuals living with HIV face unique challenges as long  term survivors of the epidemic.

Older LGBT adults in the District of Columbia are deprived of the programs and services that are commonplace in other large cities in the United States such as Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York City.  These programs and services specifically designed for LGBT older adults include congregant meal programs, housing, case management, and social networking opportunities.  In these cities funding for LGBT focused programs happens through the Department of Aging.

Unfortunately no such funding exists for older LGBT Older Adults in the District of Columbia

We ask the District of Columbia to address this need.  Please call on the Department of Aging to support LGBT older adults and take seriously the issues we raised in 2013.

We also believe that this work cannot happen without funding.  We request $250,000 be allocated to the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs to fund local community organizations serving the needs of older LGBT Adults through a competitive grant process.
