Get DC Comics to Collect Shade, The Changing Man

The Issue

In 1990, DC Comics began publishing Shade, the Changing Man, by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo. This series repurposed a Steve Ditko creation to be a part of the so-called British Invasion. Over the course of its 70 issues, it became one of the most beloved comics of the early Vertigo lineup.

While the first 19 issues were collected in 3 trade paperbacks, those are no longer in print and the rest of the series has never been collected at all. The comic remains beloved but there is no easy way to read it. Many people would love to have it in their collection but cannot.

Now, as we come up on 2020, the 30th Anniversary of the first issue of the series, Shade is once again relevant to DC Comics. The acclaimed Shade, the Changing Girl/Woman series, by Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone reference Milligan and Bachalo's series heavily, and many more readers are interested in the original series.

We would like it if DC published new editions of the 1990s Shade series, either as large paperbacks like Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol or as 30th Anniversary Deluxe Hardcover's like Morrison's Animal Man. Current comic readers deserve to read this book, and the original creators deserve to have it in print.
