Ban Shark Products in DC

Ban Shark Products in DC
The Issue
As part of our junior social justice project, our group has decided to wage a campaign to save the increasingly endangered sharks.
-
As a theme promoted by Pope Francis, my group has chosen to focus on his criticism of our “throwaway culture”, which he identifies as the social phenomenon of more waste as a result of the focus on efficiency.
-
As a result of our collaboration with the Washington D.C. office of Oceana, one of the largest international advocacy organizations focused solely on ocean conservation, we have decided to join their mission to ban the sale of shark products in Washington D.C., especially shark fins and squalene (oil from shark liver).
-
We hope to succeed in meeting with our DC city counsel member and discussing possible legislation to ban shark products in Washington D.C. This petition will be presented along with our proposal to show city-wide support.
