In Yangon Myanmar thousands of dogs are being rounded up from the streets using exceptionally cruel and painful methods such as being fed meat laced with the rat poison STRYCHNINE causing seizures, often taking several hours to die. Now dogs are being dumped by the hundreds daily at the government run Thin Bit Nin area for the permanent relocation supposedly to stop the spread of rabies to humans. Thin Bit Nin currently houses about 1,500 dogs in disgusting unsanitary conditions with no clean water, proper food or veterinary care. The standards of this shelter are inhumane and unacceptable. Not only is the cruel BUT A SIGNIFICANT HUMAN HEALTH RISK!! According to Asia for Animals (AFA) and World Health Organization (WHO) mass killing and moving animals from one area to another is an ineffective means of controlling and preventing zoonotic (transferable to humans) diseases such as rabies. The mass removal of dogs from an area may result in increased movement of dogs from surrounding areas with an unknown disease status, thereby INCREASING THE RISK TO SPREAD DISEASE TO HUMANS!!
