On July 28, 2020, Davis School District announced their plans to open schools this fall. Since we are in the middle of a pandemic, we understand that no plans are ideal right now. We feel that Davis School District has put careful thought and consideration into creating a safe learning environment for all students and faculty. Even though the death rates from COVID-19 are relatively low for children, we do not know the long term complications, to both children and adults, caused by this highly-transmittable disease. 

We acknowledge the CDC recommends that going back to school will be best for the mental health of the students; however, even though school and socialization is what is best for the mental health of students, there is no data on what the effect is on mental health of going to school under the circumstances of social distancing and mask wearing. There is no way of knowing if these circumstances are better for the mental health of students, or not. Additionally, Dr. Faucci recently stated that students going back to school is an experiment. With so many unknowns, we appreciate the cautious plan that the district is implementing. Furthermore, the CDC also recommends that face masks and social distancing be implemented. With Utah's large class sizes, social distancing is not possible with a regular school schedule. We feel that the hybrid schedule that Davis School District has announced is a good compromise for all concerns. Students will be able to have in person interaction and instruction, while maintaining social distancing and mask guidelines.
