Call for Day of Civic Engagement for DJUSD Students

Call for Day of Civic Engagement for DJUSD Students
The Issue
BACKGROUND: School shootings and threats of violence leave many students traumatized and fearful. At the same time, ignoring student concerns or punishing young people for speaking out can leave teenagers feeling powerless and unsupported. The Davis Joint Unified School District must serve their students’ needs more effectively.
CALL TO ACTION: DJUSD has an opportunity to lead by example. We call on school leaders to put student safety and well-being first. We call on school leaders to provide time and space for students to plan, lead, and participate in a day of civic engagement on April 20, the day of the National School Walkout.
NEXT STEPS: Let’s empower students to take the lead in planning activities, speakers, and workshops. Let’s support students as they discuss important issues directly affecting their own safety. Let’s give students the opportunity to develop the advocacy and leadership skills necessary for a participatory democracy.
