Delay April 29th Vote on Newly Proposed Sexual Misconduct Policy

This petition made change with 521 supporters!

On Monday, April 13th, The Davidson College Student Conduct Council voted to approve the newly proposed Sexual Misconduct Policy. This Wednesday, April 29th, they will be asked to confirm their choice in a second vote to implement the revised Sexual Misconduct Policy in the Fall of 2015. We strongly urge the Student Conduct Council to delay their vote in order to consider and engage with student concerns.

As it is currently written, the proposed policy lacks the specificity and clarity required to help Complainants and Respondents alike safeguard their rights. This policy does not adequately clarify the definition of consent, criteria for sanctioning, appeal procedures, and mechanisms to hold the college accountable in the process of adjudicating sexual misconduct cases. We are aware of these problems, and student leaders, including SGA representatives, are eager to work with the Task Force to create a policy that is acceptable to all. We have the motivation, information, and capacity to create a policy worthy of emulation by our peer institutions. We simply need more time.

On Wednesday, April 29th, we ask that the Student Conduct Council recognize that approving this policy cannot and will not serve the interests of all parties. We ask that the council acknowledge community concerns represented in these signatures and delay voting until May 6th to ensure student voices can be incorporated into the policy. We believe that in this time frame we can work with Task Force members so that the policy presented to the Student Conduct Council is the sum of our best collective efforts.

Note: When signing, please include your Davidson College class year or otherwise denote your Davidson affiliation in a comment with your signature. Including your class year or affiliation is vital to ensure we are hearing from members of the Davidson community, which includes current students, alumni, faculty, staff and families.
