Davidson College: Denounce Representative Greg Murphy's ('85) Racism
The Issue
An organization can't claim to be anti-racist while it is giving aid and quarter to racists. Davidson College has routinely celebrated and given space to Representative Greg Murphy ('85) in Facebook posts, website features, and the pages of the Davidson Journal. This must end.
Since taking office in Congress in 2019 and throughout his prior tenure in the North Carolina state legislature, Representative Murphy has used his platform and Twitter feed to contribute to the marginalization of many of the country’s most vulnerable citizens, a record the College had full knowledge of when it chose to celebrate and provide space for him multiple times since his election to Congress. In a typical display of anti-Blackness this week, Representative Murphy authored (and then deleted!) a racist tweet about Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, saying she was “only picked for her color and her race.”
We, the undersigned alumni of Davidson, call on the College to denounce Representative Murphy’s statement. We further call on the College to stop celebrating and giving space to Representative Murphy and all other elected officials, who, like him, use their many public platforms to routinely marginalize those members of the Davidson community who are most vulnerable in society.
