Sara Owen started this petition to David Michael MLA and the Department of Education

As a $50 million dollar project, investing in our local high school is great news for the school, parents and students. However, there have been major oversights in community consultation, safe design and development that must be addressed!

This is a call for action to the Department of Education to remediate the issues below and for David Michael to stand up for his electorate!

Road Safety and Traffic Management

  • This is a danger to students, road users and a nuisance to the local community. Local residents were not informed that Amelia St would become a main access road to the school.
  • The initially proposed kiss and ride did not go ahead and without safe infrastructure for pick up and drop off, the redevelopment went ahead anyway.
  • The Traffic Management Plan commissioned by the Department of Education advised that Amelia St was unsafe for parking. Yet Amelia St still became a main access road to the school. WHY?
  • As a $50 million dollar project, why hasn't there been any investment in infrastructure for parking and safe pick up and drop off to ensure of safety of students?

What do we want to happen?

  • Safe pick up and drop off infrastructure to be constructed WITHIN the school boundary.
  • This would be the SAFEST option and reduce impact to local residents and adjoining roads.

The Large Open Balcony (Amelia St) Side

  • The building and open balcony mean that many properties on Amelia St are overlooked, meaning students congregating on the balcony can see directly into properties. There have been instances of students shouting at residents within their own homes.
  • This is an invasion of local residents privacy, a noise and visual nuisance.

What do we want to happen?

  • A privacy solution to be installed. Preferred solution being that this is fully enclosed.

Other Issues

Construction Impacts to local residents -  Ongoing noise issues and contractors working outside of legal working hours, building rubbish blowing into properties, high levels of dust.

Lack of initial and ongoing consultation with the community – The local community received a single letter to review the proposed plans which did not fully explain the overall design and impact to local community. We were not prepared for the construction nightmare, the final look and finish of the school and ongoing daily impacts and stress resulting from the redevelopment.

Ongoing noise pollution impact to local residents - From construction and ongoing maintenance of the school , increase in road traffic and students accessing the area.

Visual outlook - The building on Amelia St is an eyesore and resulted in large established trees being felled. This has significantly detracted from the visual outlook of adjacent Amelia St properties.
