DISCIPLINE STUDENTS RESPONSIBLE FOR @WARSAWCHEERBLCK
The Issue
Warsaw Community High School has done it again!
By it I mean allowing white, upperclass, sports involved students get away with actions that other students would normally be severely punished for. WCHS isn't known for its tolerance and diversity and it never will be after the blatant expression of racism and ignorance that took place via Twitter and the home football game on September 9th. Students were heard chanting, "build that wall" and "learn english" to the opposing team and tweeted various remarks on Twitter that aligned with Donald Trump's beliefs. They also tweeted to an alumni that they were "ashamed" that she was an alumni and that "they take Trumps policies very seriously" after she expressed disappointment in what was being shown.
WCHS has punished previously senior students who put satirical political posters around the school featuring Waka Flocka in 2015, a 2015 sophomore was expelled for creating a "Warsaw Fights" twitter, employed a biology teacher for years after she smacked a former student across the face who later resigned after she told a student she didn't trust him because he was Mexican and received backlash. So it is only correct that they extend punishments to those students who were 1. on school grounds and 2. representing not only the student body, WCHS, former WCHS graduates, but the entire community as they chanted racial remarks.
Warsaw has made it very clear as to who is welcome in the high school and administration has made it very clear that if you are a minority or if you value your comfort then WCHS is not the place for you. This was echoed when a teacher stated that, "if you are mad at what happened at the football game then you're the problem, not the kids making racist remarks."
Every day school is started with the schools mission statement stating that their mission is to "inspire and equip all students to continuously acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others." Sadly, that is not what is going on in our school and nothing will ever be changed unless then people push for it. Sign this petition and show David Hoffert and Troy Akers that expressions of racism and unequal punishments will not be tolerated any longer.
