De-amalgamate Fraser Coast Regional Council

De-amalgamate Fraser Coast Regional Council

The issue

To apply to the Department of Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience (in 2015), for de-amalgamation of the Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC). This is important, because the current amalgamated council is counter productive to Maryborough and her surrounds (in fact a more apt name for the Fraser Coast Regional Council, would be Hervey Bay Council).

Since the amalgamation of Maryborough and her surrounds, townships such as Tiaro (which, under its own council, had an annual budget allocation of $4 million pa. and self sustained by the Tiaro people) have experienced a significant reigning back of budget allocation. Now, under the FCRC, Tiaro's yearly budget has dropped from $4 million, to just $1.5 million pa. (source: Mr. John Horrex, former mayor of Tiaro Council). It is unclear where the remaining $2.5 million is being spent, but it is certainly not in the township of Tiaro.

Woocoo Shire Council were debt free (source as quoted by CEO Joe Hill in the following article http://www.abc.net.au/news/2005-07-25/woocoo-shire-keeps-rate-rise-low/2065804) until the debt riddled Hervey Bay Council absorbed it.

Given the population of Maryborough and Her surrounds, a Maryborough Regional Council would be able to sustain itself:

Populations (year in brackets represent population census relevant for that year):

Aldershot - 1,043 (as of 2011)
Antigua - 278 (as of 2011)
Bauple - 733 (as of 2011)
Bidwill - 472 (as of 2011)
Boonooroo - 337 (as of 2011)
Dunmora - 256 (as of 2006)
Glenorchy - 339 (as of 2006)
Glenwood - 1,260 (as of 2011)
Gootchie (Gundiah) - 384 (as of 2006)
Granville - 2,689 (as of 2011)
Maaroom - 217 (as of 2011)
Maryborough - 21,777 (as of 2011)
Maryborough West - 668 (as of 2011)
Mungar - 264 (as of 2011)
Oakhurst - 1,180 (as of 2011)
Owanyilla - 321 (as of 2011)
Poona - 383 (as of 2011)
Teddington - 358 (as of 2011)
Tiaro - 433 (as of 2006)
Tinana - 4,877 (as of 2011)
Tinana South - 473 (as of 2011)
Tinnanbar - 254 (as of 2011)
Yengarie - 690 (as of 2011)
Yerra - 169 (as of 2011)

Total population of Maryborough and district: 39,855.

Population numbers extracted from the 2011 census.

With an extremely conservative estimate of 6 people per home, this would equat to 6,642 homes in the Maryborough and district area. We believe this is sufficient to sustain a local Maryborough Regional Council.
