Why this petition matters

Started by Amy Marden

In November 2018, Ghanim lost both limbs in a life-threatening work place accident. Surgeons were given no choice but to amputate after Ghanim was badly electrocuted. He has undergone multiple surgeries, and doctors were shocked he survived. Ghanim is soon to be the world’s first person to receive two robotic arms, an operation which will be performed by orthopaedic surgeon and fellow Iraqi refugee Dr Munjed Al Muderis.

To add another heart-wrenching element to this traumatic tale, Ghanim has not been able to see his wife and three children for 7 years. After fleeing Iraq in 2012, Ghanim was detained in Nauru detention centre for one year, before coming to Australia to start a new life. His visa is currently still being processed. Ghanim’s family escaped Iraq after him, and fled to Europe, eventually resettling in Finland. Due to Australia's rigid immigration law when it comes to asylum seekers, there is no easy way for them to be reunited.

Despite Ghanim's tragic circumstances, he remains optimistic, warm, and cheeky. Those who have had the privilege of knowing this wonderful man will understand just how painful it is for him to be separated from his family during this difficult period of his life.

Join us in calling on David Coleman to resettle Ghanim’s family in Australia, so they can be by his side, to support him and care for him. So his children can see their father again.

Ghanim’s family are no threat. They need to be reunited.
