Reconsider the Young Driver Reforms

The Issue

The government is planning another crackdown on the opportunities of the youth of the country. Young drivers are already afflicted with expensive lessons, some of the highest insurance in Europe in addition to soaring petrol prices in the face of high youth unemployment.

To suggest that young drivers should be forced to pay for 120 hours of lessons and be unable to obtain a liscence before 19 is absurd. With my own driving lessons costing £22 an hour, every young driver would be expected to pay £2640 in addition to the cost of a car, test fees and an average insurance premium of £3000.

Any young drivers who wish to share their acheivement with their friends and family would be stopped from doing so with restrictions on who they can carry before the age of 30 in addition to closing the door of night-shift employment with bans imposed on night time driving.

We're all told this is a free and liberal state, so I am calling on the government to reconsider this absurd curfew on the young population and blatant disregard of public freedom.

With 1 in 5 young drivers involved in a crash in their first year (myself included) that still leaves 80% of drivers causing major road accidents. As I have been declared not at fault for my incident I find it highly insulting that the government continues a crusade on public freedoms instead of targeting the problem of young drivers at the route- the poor education of driving instructors and examiners who teach us to pass the test, not how to drive safely.

Please support this petition by signing and you'll be signing to protect your right to drive whenever you see fit. Continued robbing of public freedoms cannot go unchallenged.
