Stop Using Pesticides, Killing Bees, Poisoning People & the Environment
The Issue
Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito Control & Vector District Needs to STOP Using Pesticides to control the mosquito population. The District has been using Pesticides that include Pyrethins,Piperonyl Butoxide, Organophosphate, and Deltamethrin that are VERY TOXIC to BEES, AQUATIC ORGANISMS, and are known CARCINOGENS & ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS to HUMANS. (http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC34291)
The Natural Resources Defense Council stated that "High Organophosphate Levels are linked to ADHD in children."
http://www.nrdc.org/living/healthreports/higher-organophosphate-pesticide-levels-linked-adhd.asp
The Pesticides, being overly used by the district, are responsible for interfering with honeybee reproduction, their ability to navigate, their temperature regulation, any of which can have an effect on long-term survival of honeybee colonies.
These Pesticides are also highly toxic to aquatic organisms and amphibians. The District is applying Pesticides to aquatic bodies. This is killing mosquito predators that help keep population levels down.
The Center for Disease Control states that "source reduction remains the most effective and economical method of providing long-term mosquito control" and that "source reduction activities eliminate or substantially reduce mosquito breeding habitats and the need for repeated applications of insecticides in the affected habitat."

Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District does not practice non-toxic mosquito population control as a priority method. Safer, more progressive mosquito control programs have been implemented in cities like Washington, DC, Fort Worth, TX and 8 counties near Metro Atlanta and since they have put these methods in place they have never had to resort to spraying. http://www.biconet.com/nospray/goodexamples.html
The District has continued to spray pesticides yearly since 2005. They are aerial spraying pesticides on my community on four separate dates this summer. The District does not inform the public that they are spraying pesticides that are toxic unless you sign up for an email notice. I have witnessed many times people jogging, children playing, and animals outdoors due to the District's lack of responsibility to inform the public of arial spraying. They even state on their web page "It is always a good idea to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed during application" but yet they fail to inform the community to do so. Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito Control & Vector should stop their harmful use of pesticides!! It is unethical, pollutes the environment, kills important living organisms, and is harmful to the people in their community.
