Unless you have a cable subscription you can’t watch the Minnesota Twins on TV. The Twins received a taxpayer funded stadium in 2010 when Target Field opened. A short 1 year later the Twins stopped broadcasting baseball on over the air TV and went strictly to cable.  This change discriminates against potential baseball fans who can’t afford cable or who chose not to use cable TV. As a taxpayer who is funding the Twins stadium, I feel it should be a requirement for the Twins to broadcast at least 1 game a week over the air for all baseball fans to enjoy. I’m asking you to sign this petition to help us pressure the Twins ownership to do the right thing and bring baseball back to the masses.

Going to Target Field is great, don’t get me wrong I love the park, but it’s not affordable for everyone which means you are losing fans every year.  Cable/Satellite TV are dying services with more and more people cutting the cord each year.  Of course there are the blackouts due to disagreements over the costs of the contracts which even prevent those customers from enjoying games so cable is no guarantee. The only streaming option for the Twins is MLB TV, an expensive service, which blacks out local home games so you can’t watch anything live, another turn off for potential new fans.  If you want to increase attendance you need to make the games available to EVERYONE especially if Minnesota tax payers are footing the bill.

If the Twins leadership will not take this seriously the next step will be to go to the Minnesota legislature and start lobbying for a new law that requires any state funded sports facility to make at least 1 game per week available to local residents for free on over the air TV broadcast.  It’s not a large ask and it makes sense if you want to build your fan base.  As it stands now my kids will learn to love out of market teams because that’s all they can watch and that makes me sad.
