Tell Mayor Tsitas to step aside while he is being investigated.

The issue

This petition calls on:

1. Darebin Mayor Steven Tsitas to step aside from his position while he is being investigated by the Local Government Inspectorate in regard to the CEO's contract.

2. All councillors to uphold their oath of office by acting with integrity and in the community interest, as well as ensuring that Darebin Council is not in breach of the Local Government Act.

Darebin Council is at risk of having decisions it makes being legally challenged and being sacked by the minister. This is because the Mayor, Steven Tsitas, refuses to confirm that he has complied with a confidential council resolution regarding the re-appointment of the CEO, Rasiah Dev. In a letter to the council dated April 30 state Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins noted Mr Dev’s contract was “open to legal challenge in that the purported execution of the contract by the Mayor is inconsistent with the authorisation granted by council.”

Darebin Council is already being monitored after a range of concerns were identified in an Ombudsman’s investigation into the council last year. Minister Hutchins has asked the council to respond to issues raised by municipal monitor Peter Lewinsky.

“In line with the terms of appointment by the former government, the minister is considering the monitor’s reports and in the interests of ensuring good governance is seeking a response from Darebin Council on the issues raised,” ministerial spokesperson, Ms Crebbin said.

Don't risk our democratic right to have an elected council be put in jeopardy by the Mayor's refusal to respond to this matter. Tell him to step aside until the investigation is finalised.
