As a passionate Canadian, I am deeply concerned about our country's future. The issue that worries me most is Premier Danielle Smith's controversial alliance with Donald Trump, a figure internationally known for contentious policies. 

Reports suggest that Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods once he assumes office, an action that could profoundly destabilize our economy. The response to this unprecedented and potentially harmful policy should be swift and unanimous; yet, Smith is the only Premier against retaliatory tariffs on American goods.

This is unprecedented and misguided. Trade between Canada and the U.S. is one of the most significant bilateral relationships worldwide, with goods and services trade totaling nearly $887 billion in 2019 alone (source: Office of the U.S. Trade Representative). Based on these figures, a 25% tariff could mean a potential loss of over $220 billion for the Canadian economy.

By refusing to engage in retaliatory tariffs, Smith is essentially siding with Trump, leaving us vulnerable to thrashing at the mercy of an administration that does not have our best interests in mind. This move would put our country in a precarious situation, making us seem weak and timid in the face of threats, something that our diverse and proud nation cannot afford.

I may be one voice, but my concern for Alberta and Canada runs deep. As a citizen, I beseech you, fellow Canadians, not to stand idle while our nation's dignity and economy are at stake. Our country should not be the 51st state of America but remain a powerful and independent symbol of democracy and freedom.

Therefore, I challenge all of us to urge Premier Smith to call a Provincial Election. It is our right, not just as Albertans, but as proud Canadians, to have a leader who truly represents us and will stand up to threats from the Trump administration. Let us use our democratic power to demand change now.
