Reform AWL started this petition to Representative Daniel Lipinski

Dear Congressman Lipinski:

We recognize and appreciate shelters that respect and treat our society’s animals in a humane way. We also appreciate and thank you, Congressman Lipinski, for your efforts towards animal advocacy and welfare. As you have stated, and we agree, the Aminal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge should not be shut down, but rather improved to better serve the community and their animals. We appreciate that you have helped raise awareness of your constituents’ concerns via the letters that have been written and we will continue to stand by you and your support for the animals.

As we have discussed, the issues that have been raised concerning the standard of care for the animals within Animal Welfare League has been cause for alarm. The oversight of the facility by the Illinois Department of Agriculture and what their inspections encompass is also cause for concern. The variance in inspections between local and state inspectors raised the question of what exactly do the state inspectors look for to assure the animals are receiving an acceptable level of care. Inspectors need to be able to effectively inspect and oversee the facility to ensure the utmost care for the animals with those shelters walls. The facility should be proactive in ensuring that problems are taken care of before they become overwhelming and without the need for inspections from the state.

In order to ensure that the facility upholds the highest standards of care, the board of Animal Welfare League should ensure that they look to national organizations to create standards and protocols that match national standards for their facility. The board may be well intentioned, but they need to have a better understanding of animal welfare provided by the aforementioned organizations, as well as utilizing veterinarians, accountants, and others with professional shelter experience on their board.

Many shelters in the area and across the country provide low income families with resources to adopt and help keep their animals healthy, as we all understand a pet can be a vital part of any family. We believe that with the right guidance and intervention, Animal Welfare League can regain its prominence in the community to provide the area residents with a resource for help with their own pets or to find a new family member, and to house animals that get loose. This will take some work by both the organization and the community, but we hope to continue working with everyone that is willing to improve Animal Welfare League.

We look forward to continuing our mission of reform at Animal Welfare League, as we recognize the need for such a shelter within our community. We also look forward to continuing our work together on this matter, Congressman Lipinski.

Sincerely,
ReformAWLChicagoRidge
