Daniel Andrews: STOP PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATE DEMOLITIONS

Daniel Andrews: STOP PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATE DEMOLITIONS
The issue
LET MARGARET KELLY STAY IN HER HOME
Margaret Kelly, a 68 year old former adult education teacher, Disability Pensioner, who has lived at the Barak Beacon Public Housing Estate in Port Melbourne for over two decades, has been issued with an eviction notice to leave by the 16th May 2023 by the Victorian State government. You can read how Margaret is campaigning to stop her eviction here.
Please sign the Parliament of Victoria petition to support Margaret in her battle to remain in her home and stop the demolition of the estate.
In their Big Housing Build (BHB) program, the Andrews government is building community - not public - housing. Community housing involves higher rents and cherry-picking of residents, which could mean that those who need it the most may be left out. In addition to this, demolished estates will also have full market rent housing and so-called affordable housing guaranteed for only 3 years at a 10% discount to market rents.
Some demolished estates under the BHB predecessor’s the Public Housing Renewal Program haven’t even had community housing built 6 years after the program was announced.
Please sign this petition to tell the government to take an equitable approach and prioritise public housing in their Big Housing Build.
Victoria has the least amount of public housing per capita in Australia of all states and territories and a rising rate of homelessness.
Currently there are over 120,000 adults and children on Victoria’s Housing Register who are desperate to secure affordable, safe homes.
The Big Housing Build must restore public housing as a key pathway to a fairer society in Victoria.
