The so-called Melbourne Response was designed by Cardinal Pell. It is well recognised to have minimised the liability of the church. Victims of abuse have been short changed and cornered into agreeing to inappropriate compensation payments. Other states have enacted legislation to set aside existing deeds of release signed on settlement and open up prospects for more appropriate compensation.

Victoria is a site of significant historic abuse. Daniel Andrews needs to enact legislation like that in Queensland and Western Australia to set aside existing deeds of release.

Survivors of church abuse deserve appropriate compensation for the long term effects of sexual assault at the hands of the Catholic Church in Victoria.
