Me again. 👋
I am honored by the nearly 46,000 signatures on my petition to require pedestrian safety in the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) ratings. But it's just one way that we can reduce the number of people killed on our roads.
WILL YOU SIGN this petition calling on California governor Gavin Newsom to sign SB 961? Here's the deal:
- NHTSA counted 12,330 speeding-related fatalities in the US in 2022. For every fatality, another eight people are seriously injured.
- At 25 mph and under, a person has less than a 25% chance of being severely injured or killed if they are hit.
- By 40 mph, there's a 75% chance of pedestrians suffering life-threatening injuries or dying. (Read more in this article by FSS co-founder Amy Cohen.)
Would you want this to happen to you? Would you want to cause this to another person? Watch this video for personal stories of the cost of speeding.
Here's what SB 961 does:
Requires a safety technology called intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, on all new vehicles sold in California by 2030.
Drivers of ISA-equipped passenger cars and trucks would get an audible and visual warning when they go more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.
That's it. An alert. Just like if you forgot to buckle your seatbelt or a vehicle is in your blind spot.
This is a common sense safety feature that, if signed in CA, has the potential to improve the safety of passenger vehicles across the country.
