KEEP HACKNEY ROAD'S MECCA BINGO MEGA NOT MEAGRE!

The Issue

The MECCA Bingo site on Hackney Rd is set for redevelopment. Although we all understand that redevelopment will happen the fact-finding proposal via Hawkins Brown does nothing with regards to upholding the listed status of the building or indeed it's aesthetic, doesn't offer any subsidised work or living space and will over look most residential properties surrounding it. The proposed design in no way reflects a vibrant, artistic and creative community. It does not offer communal spaces (shops are not communal venues) or offer up perhaps a music or arts venue to benefit and engage those around it.

The Your Shout leaflet posted through doors is misleading, set out to locate supporters of the proposal via their parent company Thorncliffe who's main role is to gain positive support for difficult planning applications.

Hackney residents need an unbiased voice and need to do this URGENTLY as planning permission is due in JUNE!!

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website concerning development proposals for the Mecca Bingo site at 211-227 Hackney Road. The Mayor’s statutory planning powers are strictly defined by the Mayor of London Order (2008), with the Mayor referred strategic planning applications that meet a set of criteria primarily based on size. Further information on the Mayor's planning powers can be found on the Greater London Authority’s (GLA’s) website through the following link: https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/planning/planning-applications-and-decisions/what-powers-does-mayor-have-planning. Once a local planning authority refers an application to the Mayor, the Mayor has a statutory duty to consider it within six weeks. As yet there has been no planning application for this site referred to the Mayor, although GLA officers are aware that there may be plans to submit one in the near future. It is not as yet clear, however, whether or not such an application will meet the above-mentioned criteria to make it referable to the Mayor. At this stage it is critical that the Mayor does not fetter any future decision making role with regards to any planning applications for this site. As such it is unfortunately not possible to comment on the specific details of any proposal. Once an application is submitted and referred, the Mayor will undertake a thorough assessment of the proposal and take account of all representations received. In the meantime, we recommend that you continue to engage with Hackney Council, as the local authority, regarding your concerns. Any concerns you raise with Hackney will be reported to the Mayor if and when the application is referred to him. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Officer Greater London Authority
