Making Things Right started this petition to Dan Snyder and

With the current state of the United States, a lot of people are trying to cause change. They think that just because they or the small group of people are offended, they have every right to try and get rid of something that has been around probably longer than they have been alive. The Washington Redskins have had their name since they moved to Washington in 1937 from Boston. Their team name has never affected their ability to play. This, like many other issues today, offended a very small group of people most of them not even part of the Native American background. In 2004 a poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found that 90% of those who identified themselves as American Indians answered that they were "not bothered" by the name "Redskins" being used for the Washington football team. 15 Native American scholars went on to say that this poll was just an expression of white privilege, which is outrageous. In May 2016, the Washington Post released a poll essentially replicating the Annenberg poll, with nearly identical results. They still said “the poll doesn’t make it right”. That’s usually something someone says who is on the losing side. The fact of the matter is the United States has had a troubling past, which built the foundation for what it is today. Every country has that. Countries don’t do is change their names when a controversial topic comes up, they work through it, and more often than not, come out a better country because of it. The great thing about modern history, is that is recorded. However just because it is recorded does not mean it is taught to the youth. The Washington Redskins not only represent history and what the country and the Native American people have gone through, but it reminds us. It reminds us of the time when the country was different. But instead of treating them like they were the victims which they were, the Washington Redskins honor them. They play their heart out not only for America but for their team and what their team represents. I hope this message reaches the Dan Snyder, Ron Rivera, and the rest of the Washington Redskins community. If you want to honor Native Americans keep the name.
