Provide additional funding for the City of Ironwood to clear snow from downtown streets and sidewalks, making it possible for our small businesses to operate, serve our customers, and make it through the winter.
The Issue
As a manager of a small business in downtown Ironwood I have to deal with many challenges - and one of the most cumbersome and crippling of these is snow. Each year our downtown businesses struggle with tall, impassable snowbanks right on our downtown streets and sidewalks - to make matters worse - the narrowing of the streets due to the overflow from the snowbanks means that passengers cannot exit their vehicles, while drivers have to contend with streets so narrow that only one car can pass at a time, leaving many to avoid coming downtown to shop, eat and support our stores. The city answers with - "There are no funds". If you look closely you will see that all Michigan counties get the same share of winter funds - regardless of the amount of snow they get. If the UP, the "Snow Country" is going to thrive - we need assistance. It does not matter if this assistance comes from the Federal Level or the State Level - without it - we will see less and less shops, less and less jobs and less and less reasons for tourists to come. Please propose a FAIR bill which will address our concerns and provide the funding we need to deal with the additional snow our area gets - not just for this year - but for the future as well.
