We can combat the UK construction skill shortage by focusing on career advice at School

The Issue

I have worked in the Construction industry for over twenty years providing all types of staff to construction sites across the whole of the UK, since the recession in 2007/2008 I along with many others in the industry have noticed a decline in availability of candidates and of course the skill shortage in the industry is well known. What I'm telling you isn't "new news".

Working in recruitment is getting harder, it is a daily struggle to keep up with demand of our clients and also maintain the service that is expected of us as a recruitment provider. Something needs to be done

Construction is not deemed as a "sexy" industry and isn't discussed at school, if someone doesn't do something about this (whoever that someone is) I dread to think what the industry will be like in another ten years.

This has been highlighted to me once again this week after spending the past few days interviewing school leavers for our Apprenticeship scheme - as part of the interview I asked them about the career advice service they were offered at school and as suspected it was pretty much non existent. I was told that "someone came in for a chat one day and helped them with their CV"

Where is the advice? We basically haven't moved along since I left school twenty two years ago!

School leavers need to know about careers in Construction, and not just the white collar opportunities - what about the major gap in Trades & Labour - school leavers do not know about these options!

Of course this isn't just down to Schools, Contractors need to get on board as well - this is a big message to carry after all

We all know and live in the skill shortage, however what is anyone actually doing about it?

I'd like to try and make a change
