Consider Class of 2020 in-person graduation ceremonies pending school reopenings.

The Issue

We have grown up in Dallas ISD schools, from kindergarten to 12th grade. We have showed determination through academics and earned accolades through athletics and extracurriculars.
We have overcome incredible personal and systemic obstacles. Even now, many of us are working as essential workers in the midst of the crisis. Besides getting through this crisis, all many of us want to do is walk across that stage, a moment that we and our families will treasure forever.

Some of us will be the first in our family to graduate from high school; others, the first to go to college.

We are asking for Dallas ISD to consider in person, voluntary graduation ceremonies, date TBA, pending schools reopening and stay at-home being lifted, even if this is months or a year from now. The ceremony and logistics may require simplification from the full, back to back ceremonies held at our large arenas. Those who are interested in returning for an in person ceremony would leave their contact information with their schools now.

We want the chance to walk that stage and celebrate our accomplishments. As the Class of 2020, we want to continue inspiring our younger siblings and future generations to pursue academic success in spite of all the obstacles life may throw at you— and this is the best way we know how. We’ve waited a long time for this moment, and many of us are willing to wait a little longer or work to make it happen. We believe that with DISD support, we can fulfill our students’ dream of walking across the stage in front of their families.
