Use your voice and sign our petition saying, “not our children, not our city and not our convention center.” Help us tell the world, OUR GIRLS ARE NOT FOR SALE. And together, we must let the trafficked girls and women know that we see them and that their lives matter.
Driving around downtown Dallas, new billboards undermine the efforts of those working to eradicate sex trafficking – EXXXotica Convention headed to Dallas this summer “to bring over 150 adult industry stars as well as hundreds of exhibitors” promoting the sex trade. Supporters of nonprofits, such as New Friends New Life whose mission is to restore and empower formerly trafficked teen girls and sexual exploited women and their children, seek to interconnect the fight against human trafficking and the very vehicle that drives the demand for young, vulnerable children. Why would the city of Dallas encourage conventions which propel and advertise the gateway and root cause to sex trafficking?
Yet it is happening here.
Every 26 seconds a child is sold. Men who prostitute women and traffic children are two times more likely to view pornography. Every second 28,258 images are viewed online, which create an insatiable appetite to purchase sex on sites like backpage.com and online escort services that are sponsoring this convention. One in five of these images are minors. Pornography is the manifestation of the injustice known as human trafficking. It is the gateway drug that seeks to legitimize pimping, brothel owning and sex buying – the pillars of a $32 billion global sex trade. Ninety-nine million dollars a year is spent on the sex industry in Dallas. Science proves it is addictive and dangerous physically and physiologically and overexposes the brain to continually seek more explicit and violent acts.
Trafficking victims are groomed through pornography. They are trained and then trafficked. Ninety percent of exploited women have been sexually abused. Eighty-six percent of victims have been forced to watch and imitate pornographic images and were involved and taught the sex trade through porn. The Trafficking Victim Protection Act makes it clear that the majority of those involved in pornography have been coerced, forced and defrauded and many of them are children. That is not about free speech. This is about sex trafficking. This is about the buying and selling of children in our city.
Whether explicitly or implicitly, the City of Dallas is facilitating the coercion of the vulnerable and ultimately the violence they will endure by hosting this convention. We know that traffickers have been preparing for this weekend. They have been recruiting from the nearly 400 kids that are trafficked every night in Dallas. They have been getting “their girls” in line and when the convention comes these girls will be bought and sold. It will not be their choice. It will end up being their sentence.
