"Noise Ordinance Update – I had a phone meeting today and learned 3 things.

1) The law was not changed, enforcement has. Until recently DPD was in charge of responding to noise complaints. This task has been transferred to code enforcement. Because a new group is handling complaints, they are doing it differently. They are following the letter of the law, which was not done in the past.

2) A large bulk of the noise complaints are coming FROM Businesses. This was surprising and frustrating. If we are going to make changes and/or updates to the code, businesses need to support one another.

3) …and this is/was just speculation in the meeting. COVID may have brought a new norm to Deep Ellum, low sound. Now that things are getting back to normal our neighborhood has returned to its pre-pandemic levels. Understandably this could be jarring from some. However, as has been said many times before, this is an entertainment district. Sound is just part of the living, working, visiting, Deep Ellum.

Also, as I mentioned before Jesse Moreno and City Council are aware of the problem and they are working on solutions. Right now, the biggest stumbling block it timing. City Council is not in session until August. So, July is going to be tough. My best advice at this point is to sign the petition AND work together to self-regulate.

Side note, I ordered a decibel meter today and plan to spend next weekend wandering around trying to accumulate data. Come join me if you like"
