I have submitted the following letter to TxDot to begin the formal process of changing the name of R.L.Thornton Freeway to Juanita J. Craft Freeway.

The purpose of this letter is to formally request that the Texas Department of Transportation change the name of R.L. Thornton Freeway.

I am proposing the R.L. Thornton Freeway name be changed to Juanita J. Craft Freeway. Ms. Juanita J. Craft was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement and also served as a Councilmember for The City of Dallas. Ms. Craft devoted her entire life to civil rights and racial injustice of African Americans. She had a lifelong service with the N.A.A.C.P., mentored many of our cities black leadership as youth, and served two full terms on the Dallas City Council. To name this freeway after Ms. Craft is to offer a sense of poetic justice in not only honoring her name and legacy but taking away from one of hate that worked directly against all of what Ms. Craft fought for.

The purpose of this name change request is due to the racists past and direct affiliation of Robert L. Thornton with the Ku Klux Klan. Highway construction across the country was done with intent to segregate and oppress people of color and both S. R.L. Thornton Fwy & E. R.L. Thornton Fwy served just that purpose. These freeways took on the name of a prominent Dallas banker and past Mayor during the Jim Crow era also with intent to oppress and intimidate. This is an action of our past that we must repair and take the opportunity to memorialize a real Dallas champion who devoted her life to fighting racial injustice such as what we have mentioned here.
