Richard Florizone and Dalhousie Board of Governors, put divestment back on the table

The Issue

After a week long campout in November 2017, one of Divest Dal's members spoke in front of the Board of Governors about the moral and financial imperative to divest from climate wrecking fossil fuels.

The speaking time was won by the constant presence of students, camping in the rain and the cold for 8 freezing nights on the university’s quad. It was also a result of the continued support we’ve received from our community-- from the +75 students who showed up to the Board of Governors meeting and the +500 supporters who have sent letters to individuals board members the week before the meeting.

This campaign escalation came after years of inaction by Dalhousie University. Since the university's decision makers voted against divestment in 2015, the Board refused to discuss the topic any further. November's BOG meeting was the first time in 3 years divestment was on the agenda, and we put it there.

As climate change accelerates, and as the 700+ strong list of institutions who've divested grows, we're calling on Dalhousie University decision makers to step up and answer our call. Never before has there been this much support for an issue on campus.

No more excuses. It's time to divest.
