Dads Don't Babysit
Dads Don't Babysit
The Census Bureau states, "Deciding which child care arrangement to use has become an increasingly important family issue as maternal employment has become the norm, rather than the exception." However, the Census contradicts itself by assuming in the SIPP (Survey of Income and Program Participation) that moms are the designated parent and dads are a childcare arrangement.
If this is the norm, and decisions about child care arrangements are increasingly important, then it is increasingly important to accurately portray such arrangements. To equate father-provided care with grandparent, or sibling provided care, as something functionally different from mother-provided care, does not accurately portray the arrangement, or the social, economic, and policy consequences of it.
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Census.
Recognize that dads are equal parents to moms.
I wanted to share my surprise and concern that the Census Bureau, in the "Who is Minding the Kids?" report, designates time fathers spend with their children as "child care" and not parenting.
With three quarters of moms working outside the house and women now comprising half the total labor force, times have changed. Assuming mom to be the "designated parent," as the Census continues to do, no longer accurately reflects this dramatic shift in the labor force or the nearly equal time moms and dads now share in childcare duties as a result. To equate father-provided care with grandparent, or sibling provided care, as something functionally different from mother-provided care, does not accurately portray the arrangement, or the social, economic, and policy consequences of it.
I strongly urge the Census Bureau to eliminate any presumption that one gender is the "designated parent" and reflect the changes in our society.
