Save the Beavers & Nature’s Natural Beauty
The Issue
East Windham NY Escarpment Hiking Trail is home to lots of wildlife including beavers that have lived in this area for years. These mountains are a part of a Forest Preserve which by definition is protected and managed in order to preserve a particular type of habitat and it’s flora and fauna which are often rare or endangered.
The beavers are in danger of being wiped out of this area all because of 2 phone calls made to the D.E.C.
A couple years ago in Colgate this was also a problem because the beavers would create their homes and clog up the stream which can lead to flooding of some trails. It took 30 years for them to come up with something to help this. What ended up happening was they created floating rafts so that hikers can still hike if the stream was high or low due to this.
Sadly in Windham this is not a option. Not because they can’t do it but because our community wants to just wipe out these harmless animals.
Yes I am a hunter and I am for controlling the population. This can easily be done by trapping etc. But to go in there and completely eradicate a population to make it easier for Hikers and Bikers????
Also I am a avid hiker and still have no idea how someone can think that this is the only option!
Call in or Email the D.E.C to stop the encroaching of our wildlife!
