CYPRESS CREEK: Support Safe Bus Transportation for Our Children

The Issue

Starting this fall, approximately 60 elementary students from our Cypress Creek Road community will be redistricted from Folger McKinsey Elementary to Severna Park Elementary. Students who live within the 1-mile walk zone of SPES have not been assigned a bus and are expected to walk across Ritchie Highway, Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, Evergreen Road and Riggs Avenue to and from school. Even if you do not have children that will be impacted by this, we ask you consider signing to support the current bus service.

We believe it is reasonable to ask for the county to retain the current bus service to students who are required to cross these busy highways beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. A bus will already be provided to students who live outside the one mile radius, further down Cypress Creek Road, past Dill Road.

If the county declines to maintain the current bus service, due to safety concerns, most of the impacted families intend to drive their children to and from school. This will add at least 20 vehicles during peak rush hour to an already congested 1-mile area containing multiple busy intersections and at least 4 schools with similar drop-off and pick-up hours. This burden on the community could be easily alleviated by simply maintaining the current bus service.

This issue has been resolved. All Cypress Creek students will have bus transportation regardless if they live in the "walk zone" or not.
