Delay the Israeli divestment resolution until after Passover

To the distinguished USG Executive Committee,

We, the students of Case Western Reserve University write to share with you our deep concern about a developing threat to the unity of our campus community. It is our hope that you will delay the discussion of Resolution 27-04.

Next week, the Jewish community will celebrate Passover. This is a holy time when Jews around the world gather with family and friends to remember the biblical exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt to Israel, the Promised Land. Passover is a celebration of faith and freedom, but it is also a celebration of overcoming oppression and an eternal reminder to treat others with respect and dignity.

While many students and faculty will be off-campus to participate in this religious observance with their families, a group of Case Western students and faculty will be campaigning to promote a resolution in our student government that threatens Jewish life on campus and targets Israeli communities. By inviting speakers to General Assembly during the holiday, the authors severely limit the chance to have a fair discussion of their legislation. Introducing a divestment resolution on a major holiday is a tactic seen at other schools by groups with similar aims. We, the students of Case Western, find this disrespect to a major holiday disappointing.

As members and allies of the Jewish community at CWRU, we ask that you move to delay the resolution's introduction and any relevant presentations or discussions to a time when all stakeholders in this issue have the opportunity to engage in the conversation.
