CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens: Say no to BVO

The American Chemistry Council says: "Brominated compounds are used for a number of purposes, but the major use is as flame retardants."

Having studied health and nutrition for years, I understand the significant impact that food can have on health outcomes. Therefore, I think it's important to stop using brominated vegetable oil, also known as BVO, in our food products. Potentially harmful chemicals have no place in our food.

The Dr. Oz website says: "Researchers link BVO to organ damage, neurological issues and even birth defects. Studies have found that brominated flame retardants (BVO’s cousins) build up in human tissues, including breast milk."

Companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group do have a responsibility and should stop using a chemical in the US when they make similar products without it in other parts of the world.

But why are pharmacies - places that claim to support good health - like CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens selling products with BVO when it's banned in Europe? I think it's silly that pharmacies sell cigarettes, but at least they come with a warning label!

I'm a mom and would never want to feed my child this chemical. My husband and I love playing soccer, but you'll never catch us drinking something with BVO afterwards because we care about our health, and you probably do, too!

Please sign my petition asking CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens to stop selling all products that have BVO like Powerade, Fanta, Fanta, and Mountain Dew until such point that the companies either remove BVO or make a BVO-free version for customers to choose.

If Gatorade has already pledged to remove BVO and many countries have already banned it due to questionable health impacts, why risk it?

Say no to BVO

Why would you want to make a single penny in profits selling products which contain BVO which is banned in so many countries? It's too risky. We don't need it. Please stop selling it.
