Twelve year old Tamir Rice was killed by Cleveland police who sped up to him while he played in a park and opened fire less than a second after they arrived. We want to make sure charges are filed against the killers. Tamir had displayed an air pistol to passersby, but had the plaything tucked in his waistband when the police arrived. The shooter was a rookie cop who had resigned from a suburban police force after allegations of instability, then was hired by Cleveland. His partner was a veteran who recently cost the city $100,000 to settle a complaint of the use of excessive force against a woman.
Police did not attempt to administer first aid, but continued to abuse Tamir’s family as the boy lay dying. When his sister ran up and said that was her brother, the officers pushed her to the ground where she was handcuffed in the snow and than placed in the back of a police car that was parked next to her dying brother. Tamir’s mother rushed to the scene before an ambulance arrived, but was not allowed to approach her bleeding son. She was threatened with jail if she did not stand back.
The shooting of Tamir is being investigated by the Cuyahoga County sheriff, who will turn the results over to County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty.
Please add your name to our petition urging Prosecutor McGinty to file criminal charges against the police who are responsible for the death of Tamir Rice.
