Cut MP Salaries and Excessive benefits

The Issue

As concerned citizens of the Maldives, we are deeply troubled by the excessive financial burden placed on our economy due to the high salaries, committee allowances, and premium health insurance benefits received by Members of Parliament (MPs). At a time when our nation is grappling with significant economic challenges, including growing national debt and budget deficits, it is imperative that we take steps to reduce unnecessary government expenses.

Currently, in addition to their salaries, MPs receive substantial committee allowances, significantly increasing their overall earnings. Furthermore, they are entitled to a premium health insurance package far superior to the Aasandha scheme that is available to ordinary citizens. This disparity is unfair and unjustifiable, especially when the average Maldivian is struggling with rising living costs and financial instability.

In addition to Salary cuts, we demand the following:

  1. Abolish Committee Allowances: MPs are already well-compensated for their work. The additional allowance for committee participation is an unnecessary expense and should be eliminated.
  2. Equalize Health Insurance Benefits: MPs should be entitled to the same Aasandha health insurance scheme as the general public. There is no justification for elected representatives to receive premium healthcare coverage that is unavailable to the citizens they serve.
  3. Stop former MP benefits

We urge the People’s Majlis to take immediate action to revise these policies and ensure that public funds are allocated more responsibly. Let us work together to build a more equitable and sustainable future for all Maldivians.
