Collective Agreements allow for fair working conditions. For generations, workers have fought for these rights and Unions have spent decades bargaining with employers to come to fair terms that allow adequate staffing levels, sufficient compensation, and a clearly defined level of protection for both the employee and employer. 

Frontline workers like myself understand that we need to step up and be available and adaptable during these unprecedented times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our collective agreements allow for adequate staffing all the time and still provide our well-earned time off and vacation rights. The Ontario government has waived our Collective Agreements and given employers the power to do whatever they want in regards to our schedules, the ability to refuse any and all time off, to unfairly distribute shifts to third party agencies and with no regard to seniority. Bill 195 has extended these powers into the unforeseeable future leaving most of us feeling powerless, and burnt out with no end in sight. 

While recognizing that not all employers are taking advantage of these circumstances, please know that some most definitely are. Collective Agreements are in place to protect us in the hard times, and now that we're in the hard times our government has stripped us of this basic human right.
