Nicholas Vorobyov started this petition to CUNY Students and Faculty

With the growing spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) worldwide, it is clear that this virus has evolved into a pandemic. Countries have utilized different approaches in combatting the spread of the virus, some more drastic than others (ex. China and Italy). The United States government is at a critical point in terms of handling the spread of COVID-19. New York State officially has the highest number of reported cases in the United States, and if proper action is not taken in a timely fashion, the spread will undoubtedly worsen. Governor Cuomo has repeatedly told us that community spread is inevitable and the number of cases of COVID-19 will continue to rise. This petition is a formal request to close CUNY institutions in order to minimize the spread of this disease until this situation is under control. As a student at CUNY Queens College, I am concerned for not only my own safety but also of my friends, family, and faculty. Other schools throughout the area, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Hofstra University, and St. John’s University (minutes away from my own campus) have all closed their institutions in an effort to combat the spread of this disease. CUNY should not be an exception, but should rather follow in the example set by these other schools in placing the safety of their students FIRST! Mayor De Blasio, this is where you can prove your resolve as a leader and take decisive action that can save countless lives. The same goes for CUNY Chancellor Félix Rodríguez and in my case, Queens College President William Tramontano, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Hendrey, and all those involved with making this difficult but necessary decision. We are in the infant stages of COVID-19 in the United States and we have seen its impacts worldwide. This is not a situation we should take lightly. While closing school is not an optimal situation, the health of New Yorkers should always be placed first. There are various alternatives available for teachers and students to continue learning in a different fashion. Get this situation under control and stop risking New Yorker’s lives, close CUNY before it’s too late!
